Let’s move to the middle of the seventeenth century. It was then that four of these Christian families moved to Kadambanadu, some 30 miles away from Chengannur. In the new place of dwelling too, they maintained their religious fervor. By merging and mingling well with the
Christian church and community there, they earned love and acceptance. Now, it is the eighteenth century. From Kadambanadu, there is another shift, this time to the fertile land of Omalloor. During their stay of fifty years in this place, they maintained their identity as devout members of the local Christian church.

It was in A. D. 1750 that these four families came over to Punnackad (currently in the district of Pathanamthitta). From some Muslims of the area, they purchased land – the Kochettu plot that lies south of the present Marthoma Church. Basing themselves there, the families expanded, and as time went by, three of them moved to other places such as Puthethu, Thundiyeth and Ramanchira.

The head of the family that settled in Kochettu is known as Tharian. He had two sons, Pothen and Itty. While Pothen, the elder one, shifted residence to Laheth Kizhakkethil, Itty remained at Kochettu.

Pothen, who settled in Laheth Kizhakkethil, had three sons: Tharian, Pothen and Kunjummen.

Malayil Tharian:

Tharian, the eldest son of Pothen, was born in 956, M E. At the age of 17, he married Mariamma, daughter of Kanjikkal Koshy, of Elanthoor. From Laheth Kizhakethil, Tharian moved to Malayil. Tharian was a towering personality and a devout believer. His far- sightedness and hard toil brought in much land for agricultural and other purposes. Along with Puthuchira Easo (from Kuzhikala), Puliyelil Chummar (from Kidanganoor) and Vettinilkunnathil Kurian (from Nellanikkunnu), Tharian went to meet the CMS missionary Rev. Joseph Peet, who was then stationed at Mavelikara. With consent from Peet, Tharian and friends established a church at Kuzhikala, and thus brought in the CMS stream to the land. Tharian was the Church Warden at Kuzhikala for a long time.

Tharian had six sons succeeding him. Here are the names of these children, and the places to where they branched out and settled:

• Pothen Melekuttu
• Koshy Pilaparambu
• Itty Punnoreth North
• Varughese Punnoreth North
• Thariyan Alunilkkunnathil
• Kunjummen Malayil

Our great grandfather Malayil Tharian entered eternity after a long and fruitful toil of 82 years. His wife Mariamma was called to rest at the age of 80. May the memorable achievements and the glorious life of Malayil Tharian, the ancestor to whom we trace our roots, be a beacon of inspiration to all of us.

Pothen, second son of Pothen (Laheth Kizhakkethil) was born on 963 ME. His marriage to Achamma from Poovathoor was in 979. The family had one son and one daughter. Pothen passed away in 1000 ME, at the age of 37. His son Kunjummen was brought up at the mother’s home, but he too had an untimely demise. Thus, this line of the family has no successors.

Kunjummen, third son of Pothen (Laheth Kizhakkethil) was born in 970 ME. Details of the genealogy and history of Kunjummen’s line of succession too are recorded.
